🤖 EU Urges US to Join the Fight to Regulate AI

PLUS: More creators are suing tech companies

Ready for the week ahead? Before that here’s the latest! 🔊

TOP3️⃣ NEWS

1) The EU Urges US to Join the Fight to Regulate AI 🌎
The world’s valuable and dominant internet companies are based in the US, but the nation’s lawmakers and pro-business courts have effectively outsourced the regulation of tech giants to the EU. Read more here.

In short unless the US lawmakers takes action to align with the EUs forthcoming AI act, global tech companies are going to find it increasingly more difficult to be compliant.

2) More and more creators are suing tech companies for training AI on their work

Open AI’s ChatGPT was trained on billions of creative products; images, books, music, videos. Many of them copyrighted. There’s some famous names which are now filing lawsuits against OpenAI (also Meta).

This wave of new lawsuits could become a major barrier in the adoption of the generative AI tools, and force a change in law to protect these creators, or not, and make clear guidelines for AI Tech creators. The stance on this will be quite divisive - where do you stand?

3) Elon Musk says the mission of xAI will be to essentially seek to deepen the understanding of the universe, and jokes, to find out - "what the hell is really going on?"

Following the announcement that Elon Musk would be forming a new company, Elon held a Twitter spaces audio chat on Friday.
During the event he stated that xAI, will use Twitter data for training the “maximally curious” AI systems and products which he hopes to build there. He also accused all AI companies of training their models using Twitter data in what he characterized as an illegal manner.

So, the plan is for xAI to seek to build a "good AGI," as an alternative to Microsoft, Google and OpenAI. AGI stands for artificial general intelligence and refers to AI that can solve problems like a human, according to Musk.

It sounds a bit vague at this point but more to come on this venture over the coming weeks I’m sure!
